Armed with an obsessive love of color-coding and all things related to organization, I’m on a mission to help you maximize efficiency in your business and life so you can spend time on what matters most to you.
Equally right and left-brained, I’m that unique business owner who can think like a creative, but act like an administrator. This blog is where you’ll see me bring that dual-brained magic to life, taking the left-brain side of life and breaking it down for your right-brained self.
It’s no secret to anyone who knows me in life or business: I love my Simplified Planner.
One of my best friends introduced me to this beauty way back in 2014 and I would be completely lost without it.
Even though I have my batch tasking schedule and appointments set up in Google Calendar and my daily, weekly, and monthly workflows and tasks set up in Trello, I still use my Simplified Planner every. single. day.
On a practical level, the Simplified Planner helps me keep track of my schedule and to do list without having to rely on my phone.
At the beginning of each week, I write out my detailed schedule into the planner, including my batch tasking schedule for each work day. At the end of the work day, I look at my list of tasks for the next day in Trello and choose my top three — the ones that have to get done — and write those into my planner.
But here’s the thing — the Simplified Planner is more than just a planner and its purpose is more than just practical.
Y’all may think I’m being a bit dramatic here, but the Simplified Planner changed my life and makes me a better boss lady every single day.
You can go to Target or Staples and pick up a planner for a few bucks to keep track of your to do list and your schedule if you want, and I used to do that.
But it wasn’t until I got a Simplified Planner and started really using it that I began to see its value.
If you’ve spent any time around Emily Ley or the Simplified brand, you know that it’s about so much more than creating a beautiful product. It’s about inspiring and empowering women to declutter, organize, and simplify their lives for what matters most. (Sound familiar?)
Beyond just giving me a place to write down my to dos and schedule that isn’t tied to a plug or battery, the Simplified Planner empowers me to be my best boss in three somewhat unconventional ways.
Confession: I have workaholic tendencies.
This wasn’t really an issue when I was working 9-5 jobs I didn’t love, but when I started working from home and doing things I actually enjoyed, it was all too easy to spend all my time doing that instead of, you know, actually living my life.
Thanks to my Simplified Planner, after I “clock out” at the end of the work day, I don’t have to pull up my phone or computer if I need to check something in relation to my priorities for the next day or my schedule for the rest of the week.
This helps a lot in creating those work/life boundaries that are so difficult to maintain when you’re working from home because I’m not tempted to “quickly” check in with something else only to find myself still working three hours later.
If you’re anything like me, your digital to do list is long. Writing out my top three tasks for each day into my Simplified Planner cause me to take what is often a lengthy to do list and distill it down into my top three priorities.
Ideally, I’ll get everything on my list done each day, but that rarely happens.
Writing out my top three tasks into my Simplified Planner reinforces that those are the priority for the day and allow me to focus on those first, before even looking at everything else I can or want to get done that day.
I don’t know about you, but when you run a business online and you work from home, it’s easy to feel like you’re always connected to technology.
While a paper planner might seem archaic to some, having something not plugged into a wall helps me not feel as stressed or frazzled, even when things are absolutely bonkers and there’s little to no white space on the pages of that planner.
But there’s something about intentionally choosing something that isn’t all about productivity and efficiency and getting the most things done in the least amount of time that reminds me of an important truth — I’m a human being, not a human doing. My business is here to serve my life, not the other way around.
Having the Simplified Planner be my “go to” for having a handle on my life and business helps me live out the heart of the Love & Spreadsheets brand — to simplify my life and spend my time on what matters most.
