For most type A people like myself, we have one or two things we live or die by. Those things we simply could not function well without. For me, the biggest of those is, hands down, the Simplified Planner.
This baby is the linchpin to my life and the absolutely essential key to making sure my work days are productive and organized instead of a hot mess of disappearing time.
But the Simplified Planner is more than just a planner that allows you to map out your days and tasks. You might think because the pages of the planner are so simple, you can’t use it for a whole lot else, but often the bells and whistles added to other planner pages restrict you instead.
The simplicity of the Simplified Planner makes it incredibly versatile and the perfect tool for organizing so much more than just your days and tasks!

5 THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH THE SIMPLIFIED PLANNER (OTHER THAN PLAN YOUR DAY)
I’m all about finding the right tools for your life and business that increase your productivity and efficiency and allow you to spend time on the things you really care about.
For some people, the answer to that is finding a planner that’s designed to be more than just a planner. Finding a planner that also has built in ways to help them track, organize, or record other things is the key to their success.
I am not one of those people.
I love simplicity. I love a blank slate. I love being able to take a simple, structured framework and make some magic happen with it. That is part of why I love the Simplified Planner so much — it can be “just” a planner, but because it has such a simple design and layout, it has the potential to be so much more.
The possibilities are truly only limited to your imagination, but to get those wheels turning, here are five additional things you can use the Simplified Planner for other than planning your day!
SETTING DEADLINES OR REMINDERS
There are few things I hate more than missing a deadline or forgetting to do something because I didn’t have any kind of reminder set up.
Regardless of the type of business you run (or if you run a business at all), one of the most common reasons things fall through the cracks is because there isn’t a simple system or central location for those ever important deadlines or reminders.
Since the Simplified Planner already houses your schedule and tasks for today, it’s also a fantastic place to jot down those ever important deadlines or reminders for various things!
These can take the form of a to do you write down in advance or something you jot down in the extra notes section on the planner. You can use the space to remind you to send a birthday card or purchase a gift, when a bill is due, or when to submit a deliverable to a client or turn in paperwork for something for your kids.
Because you’ll already be looking at your Simplified Planner throughout the day to check off your tasks, you’ll see those little reminders you’ve pre-written in every single time you check in with your planner for other things.
Pro Tip: To really make your reminders or deadlines stand out, visually distinguish them! Use a sticker, a different color pen, or a highlighter to make them really pop!
PLANNING YOUR MEALS
I don’t know about you, but I have always struggled with meal planning.
Not actually planning out the meals, mind you, but sticking with that plan and remembering what it was in the first place! I tried all sorts of different tools to help me plan out meals for the week, but nothing ever seemed to stick, because I wasn’t looking at it on a regular basis.
Using the notes section of the Simplified Planner to plan my meals makes it so simple and so much easier! Like with deadlines and reminders, I see my planned out meals for the day by default, because I’m already looking at my Simplified Planner to guide my schedule and tasks for the day.
And because there’s so much space in the notes section, you can also use that to jot down your grocery list on a particular day you’re heading to the store!
A couple of years ago, I decided I wanted to start tracking my spending in certain areas — specifically when it came to my clothing and my beauty purchases.
I wanted to see what I was buying, how much I was spending, and how long it was lasting.
I built out a pretty simple spreadsheet to track the information over the long-term, allowing me to see patterns and the like, but it became obvious pretty darn quickly I needed something to supplement that. Taking time every single day to input the information into the spreadsheet was tedious and unnecessary, but if I only did it once a month or once a week, it was difficult to remember exactly what I’d bought, when, and for how much.
This is another place the Simplified Planner comes in handy! I keep it by my side at work and it usually comes with me when I’m out and about. This means I always have it with me, so I can easily take a few seconds to write down whatever I’ve just purchased. Then, at the end of the month, I can just flip back through my Simplified Planner to pull the information to put into the spreadsheet!
In a similar way to tracking certain spending habits, the Simplified Planner is also great for tracking health habits or changes.
This could be as simple as tracking your water consumption for the day by using a hash mark each time you finish 8 oz., tracking a regular weigh-in, or recording your times and distances for runs.
This is the type of thing you could also transfer to another tool like a spreadsheet to more easily view long-term patterns, but just like with spending habits, it takes less time to input that information all at one time, rather than doing it every single day.
You might be noticing a pattern here, but this is the general equivalent of “to track whatever you want.”
Personally, in addition to certain health and spending habits, I also use my Simplified Planner to help me track my reading. This is another area where I have a spreadsheet I use for longer-term tracking, but since my Simplified Planner is with me all the time, I find it so much easier to just jot down a note when I buy a book, pick one up from the library, start one, or finish one.
Then, when it comes time each month to update those records, all of that info is right at my fingertips and I don’t have to wrack my brain to try and remember when I started or finished a particular book!
Whether it’s reading, your daily word count for writing, or something completely different, a thing you just write in your planner or a thing you transfer to another tool like a spreadsheet, the point is this — the Simplified Planner’s simple design gives it the freedom to be an absolute powerhouse in terms of planning and organization.
The things you can do with it other than the obvious planning of your day are limited only to your experimentation and imagination.
And exciting news! If you’ve been hoping to join the Simplified Sisterhood, today is your lucky day, because it is launch day for the 2020 Simplified Planners!
I’ll be rocking out the Daily Edition for the sixth (!) year in a row, this time going with the signature Happy Stripe for my cover. I’ve got my system for using the planner pretty down pat by now, so I’ll just be replenishing some color coding flags and dots, and possibly getting myself a page marker to make it easier to find where I am in the planner as the year progresses.
The planners officially launch at 10am EDT and you don’t want to wait! They can sell out super fast, so if you’ve got your eye on any of the six gorgeous cover designs (or on the Dapper Desk), get on over there and join in the fun!
